Blancco data destruction now recognised as a good option for Federal government

The Federal government standards on data destruction have been modernised and Blancco is now recognised as a suitable option for secure data destruction.

In June of 2020, the Australasian Certification Authority (ACA) awarded BDE 6.9.1 Common Criteria (CC) certification via its Australasian Information Security Evaluation Program (AISEP).

Government data and asset managers in Australia and New Zealand can now confidently use Blancco Drive Eraser (BDE) to sanitise end-of-life data from loose hard disk drives and solid-state drives, as well as those in PCs, laptops and servers.blancco-text aboutThis is good news for agencies that adhere to data sanitisation requirements within

• the Australian Government Information Security Manual (ISM),
• the Australian Privacy Principles guidelines (APP) 11.2,
• the New Zealand Information Security Manual (NZISM),
• the New Zealand Privacy Act (1993) and
• other mandates regarding data erasure, such as the GDPR’s data minimisation and ‘right to be forgotten’ articles.

The standardised examination includes software architecture, safety precautions, customer delivery practices and more. Certification therefore provides government users with a level of assurance that the product is well engineered and does what it says it will do.

By being able to use Blancco solutions, our customers can save money on data destruction and increase traceability and transparency on data destruction outcomes.

As a result, we hope to see more hard drives being reused rather than destroyed, especially when it comes to newer drives.

How to build circular economy reusing old electronics

Of particular benefit is mobile device erasure which enables us to safely reuse phones and tablets previously destined for the shredder.

Being allowed by the client’s policy to wipe the large number of iPads and mobile phones received, will allow us to build the local circular economy and redirect otherwise working devices that would have been destroyed back into hands of people that can benefit from them.

Here are some examples of our circular partnerships:

We have experienced an overwhelming demand during COVID-19 period to provide iPads for students who cannot afford a new laptop and can’t access education due to isolation.

Opportunities to close the loop on electronics are plentiful and we encourage all WA organisations with large amounts of electronics suitable for reuse to get in touch with us.

What’s next: Is your Data Destruction policy up to date?

Is your organisation sending reusable electronic items such as mobiles, laptops and computers for recycling meaning physical destruction?

Ask your IT Asset Manager or another decision maker about your IT disposal policy. Some government agencies and private companies still operate using outdated policies that effectively send all IT equipment to our shredder. While this is better than sending them to landfill, it’s 25 times better to reuse than recycle your electronics. Our team is happy to answer any questions regarding your secure data destructions and policy.
