In November 2020, Total Green Recycling become a member of the Battery Stewardship Council.
“The more opportunity the community has to dispose of batteries responsibly, the better. So we are very excited about the future.”
At its essence, stewardship means responsible management of a product, such as batteries from design through to its end of life. An example of a recently implemented Product stewardship is the Container Deposit Scheme for eligible drink containers. Deposit return systems provide a financial incentive for consumers to return drink containers, which might otherwise be littered or thrown in the landfill.
Stewardship for recyclers of batteries means participating in stewardship schemes, adhering to accreditation standards for sorting and aggregation, protecting workers, responsibly processing batteries, and ensuring that all downstream shipments of process outputs are tracked and reported.
“We saw the value in joining the Battery Stewardship Council immediately. Batteries are revolutionising the world, however, their increased usage represents a significant community and environmental risk due to their volatile properties. When not managed correctly they can cause fires and release toxic compounds,” said General Manager of Total Green Recycling Evan Cocks.
Total Green Recycling is part of the broader solution for end of life electronics, so jumping on board with a product stewardship scheme for batteries makes perfect sense. We presently receive a large volume of batteries through our operations and intend to further grow our capability and service offering in this space to councils, businesses and the general public.
